Exploring the Legal System

It is hard to understand how the legal system works.  Gaining insights into the criminal, civil, and family law processes, the memoir “notes from A GRUNT LAWYER IN THE TRENCHES” is a captivating book which provides a firsthand account of Robert J. DiLorenzo’s experiences growing up in South Brooklyn and his subsequent journey through the legal profession, the legal system, and its procedures.  From the distinction between felonies and misdemeanors to the steps involved in misdemeanor and felony cases, Rob sheds light on the various stages of presenting a case for trial or disposition. The book accomplishes this in plain language, and not legaleze.

The book delves into the role of defense attorneys, the importance of evidence exclusion motions, and the art of negotiating plea bargains.  Civil cases, which involve disputes between individuals or organizations, are also covered. The process of filing a complaint, serving summons, and the subsequent responses and motions.  Discovery procedures such as depositions and interrogatories are outlined in a humorous fashion, as well as the possibility of court-ordered mediation to resolve the case before trial.  Rob touches upon family law, particularly divorce cases and child custody, highlighting key aspects such as property distribution, the pitfalls of child custody, and support issues.  DiLorenzo takes the soapbox in an effort to display family law and the need to change the law from an adversary system to a more family friendly system that helps rather than hurts the children who are innocently involved.

The memoir also delves into the author’s early encounters with the law and his fascination with the legal profession. Through personal anecdotes and experiences, the author offers a unique perspective on the challenges and rewards of being a lawyer.  They reflect on his involvement in a band during high school, performing at a renowned club and interacting with famous musicians, while also acknowledging the prevalent drug culture within the music scene.
